Conversation with the Product Creator
We spoke with Ádám Mausecz, the brewer about the Eleven O'Clock Lady Likes Cantaloupes. We asked him why they chose the quadrupel style, where the idea for cantaloupe came from, and what experience awaits those who pour their first glass.
Where did the idea for this beer come from?
In winter, high-alcohol beers are generally sought after. Although there are various types of strong beers, the selection often boils down to imperial stouts and barley wines. My choice, however, was a style that is fairly overlooked outside Belgium – the quadrupel.
What is the main twist or uniqueness?
After deciding on the quadrupel, I immediately started experimenting with the addition of spices and fruits. Several variations were tried, and cantaloupe proved to be the most exciting, becoming one of the defining elements of the beer's character.
What are the key ingredients or flavor notes?
The style is characterized by a chestnut-brown color, so a significant amount of caramel malt was included in the recipe. The traditional ingredient of Belgian beers is candy sugar, so we included it too. Naturally, cantaloupe is also a crucial part of the recipe, added in concentrate form.
What experience should someone expect on their first taste?
The base beer carries spicy, caramel malt, and dried fruit notes. The cantaloupe delicately shifts these flavors towards the dried fruit direction and adds a special fruity layer to the beer.
Who do you recommend it to, and for what occasion?
Primarily for lovers of strong beers, who are open to venturing a bit away from the usual flavors. Such a beer is perfect for a calm winter evening but is also an excellent gift under the Christmas tree, or it can even accompany the New Year toast.
Is there any behind-the-scenes secret or fun fact about it?
Many believe that as a Belgian abbey beer, it belongs to an ancient style, but in fact, the quadrupel was created by the La Trappe brewery in 1991. Although now considered a classic, the style is surprisingly young in the world of Belgian beers.
